ZuriQ, a 15-person Zürich quantum computing startup, closed a $25.5 million seed round on Tuesday to fund a chip design that stores qubits in a two-dimensional grid of trapped ions rather than the one-dimensional ion chains that dominate the field. In a 1D chain, qubit count scales with chip length, capping useful machines in the tens. ZuriQ's 2D layout scales with area.
The architecture draws on a Penning micro-trap concept published with ETH Zürich and outlined on arXiv, giving the company peer-reviewed and preprint grounding for the 2D claim.
The capital lands as the field's commercial race tightens. Microsoft has targeted commercial quantum by 2029, according to Forbes, with Google and IBM on similar timelines. Quantinuum, a leading trapped-ion competitor, listed on Nasdaq last month at a reported $15 billion valuation. ZuriQ scientific adviser Jonathan Home puts the contrast bluntly: area scales, length doesn't.
Co-founder and CEO Pavel Hrmo has grown the team from four to fifteen over roughly eighteen months, after a prior $4.2 million round in January 2025. The company has not published independent performance or error-rate data on the 2D design; the "many thousands" qubit count is a ZuriQ-aligned target until an outside lab tests it.
