The U.S. Departments of Energy and Labor signed a five-year memorandum of understanding on July 21 to fund AI-assisted hazard detection, remote sensing in underground mines, and workforce retraining for automated operations, the Department of Energy announced. The framework links DOE's Office of Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy and Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation, plus the National Energy Technology Laboratory's Coal Center of Excellence, with the Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling signed the agreement, which names joint R&D, AI-assisted hazard detection, emergency preparedness, digitization of legacy mine data, and worker training for automated operations as focus areas. The MOU is policy plumbing: inter-agency coordination on research, safety and workforce, with no new funding line and no new binding rule. Underground robots can enter unstable, poorly ventilated or otherwise hazardous workings before employees are sent into the area — a capability the DOE press release flags as a direct safety use case for AI in legacy mines. AI cannot confirm a mineral deposit exists, so drilling and field work remain essential. "Critical minerals" here means copper, lithium, rare earths and similar inputs central to energy, defense and advanced manufacturing.
