San Diego startup Unigrid has cleared Hyundai Motor Group's internal safety gauntlet for sodium-ion cells built around a sodium chromium oxide (NCO) cathode. The validation was completed through Hyundai's ZER01NE Accelerator program, which selected Unigrid in 2025 from a field of non-flammable stationary storage chemistries.
Unigrid's 210Ah NCO cells went through Hyundai's abuse tests with no fire and no thermal propagation, the failure mode in which one overheated cell can set its neighbors alight. The same cells held up across a -20°C to 60°C operating window (-4°F to 140°F) and at 100% depth-of-discharge cycling with what the companies describe as minimal capacity degradation. Cycle count and remaining capacity percentage are not disclosed.
Sodium-ion, a rechargeable chemistry distinct from the lithium-ion cells in most electric vehicles, has long trailed lithium on energy density. What automakers and grid-storage buyers want from sodium is a safer, cheaper alternative for stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS), where cycle life and thermal stability matter more than range. Hyundai and Unigrid will co-develop a sodium-ion BESS for Hyundai's global production sites under its Green Factory initiative. Capacity, power rating, and timing are not public, and BEST Magazine notes the test protocol's granularity has not been disclosed.
The validation is a procurement-shaped gate, not a verdict on the chemistry. Unigrid also signed a North American commercialization deal with Syntropic Power earlier in August. The next milestones are the BESS spec and the first installed unit, and neither has a date.
