The cuts target layers seven or more below the CEO and "micro teams" of one or two reports, days after Uber posted $14.2 billion in revenue and $2.4 billion in net income.
Uber will cut roughly 3,300 jobs, about 10% of its workforce, primarily middle managers, according to a Wednesday memo from CEO Dara Khosrowshahi reported by Bloomberg and Gizmodo. The announcement lands a week after Uber posted $14.2 billion in quarterly revenue and $2.4 billion in net income, both higher than a year earlier.
The memo frames the cuts as "removing layers, simplifying team structures, refining our global location strategy." The mechanism is targeted: Uber plans to reduce employees seven or more layers below the CEO by about 20% and cut "micro-teams" of one or two direct reports by nearly 50%.
The memo does not mention AI. The reported link is circumstantial: prior Bloomberg coverage, referenced in the layoffs reporting, noted Uber had exhausted its annual AI tool budget within months earlier this year, and Khosrowshahi has said about 10% of Uber's code is being written by AI agents.
Uber is now the fourth major tech firm this year to use near-identical "flattening" language while cutting thousands of jobs at record or near-record profits. Block cut more than 4,000 jobs earlier in 2026; Amazon and Meta have made similar moves. Whether the cuts reflect post-pandemic overhiring, AI-driven productivity, or both, the memos do not say.
