The Energy Information Administration says operators plan another 54 GW of utility scale battery storage by 2028, mostly at solar plants, but the forward figure is operator reported plans, not delivered projects.
U.S. utility-scale battery storage crossed 52 gigawatts in the first half of 2026, the Energy Information Administration reported, and operators have told the agency they plan to add another 54 GW on top of that by 2028.
The fleet has averaged 70% annual growth over the last three years. The U.S. had 43.6 GW of operational battery storage at the end of 2025; in the first six months of 2026, operators added another 8.3 GW. The 54 GW forward figure is operator-reported plans, not delivered projects: 14 GW planned for the second half of this year, 26 GW for 2027, and 14 GW for 2028. EIA has historically revised plan totals down.
Most of the largest battery units sit at solar plants. Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm in California, a 500 MW solar array paired with 500 MW of storage, began operating in December 2025 and plans to roughly double by November 2026, which would make it the largest storage facility in the country. Florida's Manatee Solar Energy Center, with 409 MW of battery storage at 75 MW of solar, has held the number-two spot since 2021. Nevada's Gemini Solar Hybrid, online since 2024, pairs 690 MW of solar with 380 MW of storage.
For scale, a typical large nuclear reactor runs about 1 GW, so 52 GW is roughly 50 reactors of capacity, except these batteries charge and discharge on the grid's own schedule.
