The U.S. Department of Energy committed more than $5 billion on July 21 to 278 AI-for-science projects under the Genesis Mission, a federal program first announced in December 2025 to put machine-learning tools in the hands of national-lab researchers. The first slate spans Argonne National Laboratory and other labs, with private partners including quantum-computing startup Infleqtion. The largest single award is a three-year, $60 million nuclear-energy project that uses AI to design and build reactors faster.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright called the 278 selections "the very best of our nation's scientific enterprise." Argonne's nuclear-science director Temitope Taiwo listed the application lanes: nuclear fuel recycling, quantum, weather and water forecasting, advanced microelectronics, and cybersecurity.
Independent analyst Handel Jones (International Business Strategies) disagrees on scale. "$5 billion is better than nothing, but it should start at $50 billion," he told EE Times. The same dispatch cites a Chinese government earmark of roughly $295 billion for a parallel effort, a figure that has not been independently confirmed. A Boston Consulting Group report from June 30 says the U.S. still leads on frontier models, talent, and capital; China leads on cost-optimized models.
