A federal health-research agency is funding a four-year, up-to-$26 million effort to make DNA-based medicines on demand at the research bench, not in centralized factories. ARPA-H, the federal program created to fund high-risk health research, has contracted the work under FLASH (Flexible Automation for Scalable Health), which sits inside a larger federal push to onshore DNA manufacturing.
GE HealthCare leads the team as prime contractor. DNA Script, a French-American synthetic biology company, is the technical integrator contributing its enzymatic DNA synthesis (EDS) platform and its benchtop DNA printer, called SYNTAX.
EDS is a cell-free, enzyme-based alternative to the phosphoramidite chemistry that still dominates commercial DNA synthesis. The companies say it is faster and easier to deploy in small batches, though independent EDS throughput and fidelity benchmarks are not yet public for this configuration.
Stated targets include supporting personalized medicines, personalized vaccines, and other genetic-medicine work. The federal program description frames the platform as a "DNA printer" for high-fidelity, ready-to-use DNA, with planned deployment across U.S. medical research centers, universities, and federal agencies. ARPA-H program manager John Schiel said the award is meant to "decentralize" DNA production from specialty chemical plants to benchside automation.
The $26 million is a ceiling, not a committed sum, and the public program description is truncated. Neither company has published peer-reviewed throughput or fidelity data for the integrated system, so the federal bet is on the chemistry, not yet on a proven workflow.
