Alibaba previewed Qwen 3.8, a 2.4-trillion-parameter AI model, on July 19 at the World AI Conference in Shanghai, two days after Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model, as open weights (open weights means anyone can download and run the model). The 48-hour gap inside the same conference window reads less like coincidence than a coordinated open-weight moment from China's frontier AI labs.
Alibaba calls Qwen 3.8 "second only to Fable 5" on its own evaluations, but no independent benchmark or model card has been published, and the open-weight release has not yet shipped. Only the preview SKU is purchasable through Token Plan, Qoder, and QoderWork. Kimi K3's 2.8T parameter count and July 17 release date come from MarkTechPost's reporting on Moonshot's launch; no third-party benchmark is in the public set either.
