A "create image" button inside Google Earth did not break satellite imagery. It moved the satellite layer inside the generative model, so every verification pipeline that trusted it now appears to inherit the ambiguity the model is trained to produce — a structural inheritance that is a bounded inference from the architectural change rather than a demonstrated failure of any specific pipeline. The epistemic break occurred at launch; the rollback does not undo it.
For two decades, civilian and commercial satellite imagery functioned as a rare piece of epistemic infrastructure that journalists, war-crimes investigators, and disaster reporters could point to as ground truth, because the chain from sensor to pixel was hard to forge at scale. The new failure mode is different: an evidentiary record and a generated render now share the same screen and the same near-zero production cost. The repeatable mechanism: any consumer product that lets a user prompt a real coordinate into a synthetic view hands forgery a new default distribution. The strongest counterargument is that provenance signing, C2PA-style metadata, and tighter guardrails can re-seal the layer, and Google's walkback suggests they can. That only sharpens the question. The next product launch in this class will be answered by a more grown-up question than "did it refuse the bad prompt": was the prompt red-teamed, and what is the provenance story for satellite-derived imagery?
