According to QbitAI's reporting, Apollo Go's Hong Kong airport-island test, approved July 23 and launched July 27, is the moment the first fully driverless Robotaxi crossed into a right-hand-drive commercial frontier. Apollo Go said it would partner with Uber and Freenow for a London test, with commercial service expected from 2027 after regulatory sign-off.
The engineering problem is misnamed. The mirror in the steering wheel is solved. What an autonomous stack has to relearn in every new city is traffic semantics: roundabout direction, bus-lane etiquette, drop-off norms, the specific way a London cyclist takes a junction. The perception stack and the simulation toolchain travel. The habits do not.
