Commercial fusion has been waiting on a treaty. The hardware that decides whether a fusion power plant is physically possible, the superconducting magnet that cages plasma hotter than the sun's core, is no longer being built by a 35-nation consensus in France. It is now being built inside one country's six-year industrial cycle.
The Markman report points to a 582-ton superconducting magnet finished, cooled, and energized in Hefei. It is the heaviest single piece of fusion hardware ever assembled and the load-bearing part of BEST, a burning-plasma tokamak the Institute of Plasma Physics is racing to finish by the end of 2027. Sixteen such coils will ring the reactor, each carrying 100,000 amperes to hold plasma above 100 million degrees in place. The same coil for ITER stores a third of the energy and is still being manufactured.
The mechanism is older than fusion. A national industrial program that owns the supply chain, superconducting wire to structural steel, can compress the timeline the way the same playbook compressed solar panels and electric vehicles. Whoever finishes the magnets finishes the clock.
A magnet is not a reactor, and burning-plasma experiments have slipped on both sides before. ITER is not expected to run at full power until the 2030s, with commercial demonstration plants penciled in for mid-century. China is now targeting burning-plasma operations around 2030, roughly a decade ahead of the consensus schedule. The clock has moved. It is no longer set in committee.
