The embodied-AI race has a launch surface and it is a showroom floor. China's largest EV maker just claimed it as a stage.
BYD's first humanoid robots will stand in the company's Di Space brand stores in August and greet visitors, per a Thursday statement to the South China Morning Post. The hardware is the headline, but the move is the store: a controlled venue where the company controls lighting, narration, and the customer who walks in. Tesla used the same play with Optimus, putting a robot in its own event cadence before the robot earned a job. BYD is repeating the mechanism in a different store.
Embodied AI is being sold the way flagship phones are sold, on a stage the seller owns, before the unit economics exist. That is a real category move. It is not a product launch. BYD's own statement leaves that gap open, calling the robots "more than just a concept product" without naming a price, a customer, or a job the machine replaces. Stella Li's June "full commercialisation" line is a future-tense forecast, not a shipment.
The falsifier is straightforward. The first BYD humanoid that ships, earns revenue, and replaces a paid task ends this read. Until then, the robot on the showroom floor is the product, and the product is the brand.
