The consumer AR glasses market is splitting into three incompatible product theories just as the first devices head for store shelves this fall, and the companies doing the splitting have nothing to do with each other.
The cleanest illustration is the most expensive. Snap's Specs AR glasses, unveiled at Augmented World Expo in June and priced at $2,195, are the first consumer AR glasses designed to work without a phone, a laptop, or a separate compute puck. Everything runs on the headset: the LCoS display panel, the 51-degree field of view, the electrochromic lenses that tint in roughly ten seconds, and the unspecified processing silicon. At 132 grams and offered in 47mm and 52mm sizes, the device is also meaningfully lighter than the 226-gram developer version Snap was showing a year ago.
Snap has not yet disclosed the panel resolution or maximum brightness, and the app lineup, which covers Lens Studio plus 3D measuring, navigation, casting, and whiteboard tools, with Snapchat availability unconfirmed, is still described by the company as TBD. So the standalone bet is not yet a finished product, but the architectural commitment is locked. Snap is essentially saying that for AR glasses to replace phones, they have to behave like phones, including carrying their own weight, both literally and computationally.
The opposite architectural bet comes from Google and Xreal's Project Aura, which ties the headset to a portable compute and battery puck rather than a phone. Aura offers a 70-degree field of view and what Gizmodo reporter Raymond Wong described as fluid hand tracking during a hands-on at Google I/O 2026 in May. The headset is slated for a fall 2026 release, and pricing has not been disclosed. The puck handle is the key trade-off: the headset stays lighter than Snap's standalone build, but the user carries a second device. It is a return to the smartphone-tethered approach some early smart-glasses prototypes tried, only now with a dedicated accessory instead of a phone.
The third bet, and the loudest by spec sheet, is happening well below $1,000. Viture's $599 Luma Ultra and Rokid's as-yet-unpriced Rokid AR both use the same trick: a tri-camera system with two temple-mounted spatial-tracking sensors plus a full-color RGB camera, delivering six-degrees-of-freedom head and hand tracking. Rokid's specs were first published via a Reddit r/augmentedreality post rather than an official press release, so they should be read as a supplier leak until Rokid confirms them. Viture's Luma Ultra is shipping at the same $599 anchor with the same sensor story.
Then there is the price war. RayNeo's Air 4 Pro, built by TCL, ships for $299 with 3DoF tracking, support for HDR10, and a virtual screen sized up to 201 inches. X by Xreal's Xbx a01 video glasses launched at the same $299 price, an explicit benchmark aimed directly at RayNeo. At this end of the market, the differentiation is no longer about positional tracking fidelity. It is about who can hit $299 with a credible spec sheet first.
Three design philosophies emerge when these products are read together. Snap's standalone bet makes the headset behave like a self-sufficient computer, taking weight and heat on the head to avoid tethering anything else. Google and Xreal's puck bet accepts a second device in the pocket or on a lanyard in exchange for a lighter headset and a wider field of view. The budget tier bets on tethering to whatever phone is already in the pocket, racing to add six-degrees-of-freedom tracking at consumer-electronics prices.
Gizmodo's analysis places Apple's Vision Pro, with its six world-facing cameras and four eye-tracking cameras, at the high-water mark for spatial-computing fluidity, with Meta's Orion-style true AR glasses and Apple's smart-glasses project still rumored rather than shipped. That comparison frames the fall 2026 launches as the first genuine consumer AR products rather than another generation of developer kits, but it also underscores that the major platform plays are not yet in market.
For any organization evaluating AR pilots, vendor partnerships, or member-facing service experiments through 2027 and 2028, the architectural fork matters more than any individual spec sheet. A pilot that picks Aura today commits the institution to the puck form factor and its second-device workflow. A Specs pilot commits the institution to standalone battery and thermal design as the binding constraint. A budget-tier purchase commits the institution to phone tethering as a default, which constrains the kinds of mobile use cases worth testing at all.
What to watch this fall: whether Snap's standalone bet moves enough units at $2,195 to justify the higher hardware bill, and whether Google's puck approach lands at a price that makes the second-device trade-off feel like a feature rather than friction. The budget tier's question is whether Rokid's leaked six-DoF spec holds up when reviewers get hold of a shipping unit. Until those three answers land, AR procurement is still a buy-on-three-different-theories market.
