A Saronic (U.S. autonomous vessel maker) driverless boat pulled a downed U.S. Apache attack helicopter crew from the Gulf of Oman last month, the first public rescue by a drone boat. The mission now forces a question about what big warships still do.
A 16-foot driverless boat closed on a life raft in the Gulf of Oman last month and lifted out the two-man crew of a downed American Apache attack helicopter. The vessel was a Saronic Corsair, and the June operation is the first time, in public record, that an unmanned surface boat was used to take service members out of harm's way rather than put ordnance into a target (Forbes).
The Saronic Corsair sits inside a class of unmanned surface vessels built around interchangeable payloads. MARTAC's MANTAS T-12, transferred by the U.S. Pentagon to the Philippine Navy in 2024, has a payload bay that supports torpedoes and underwater vehicles. The UK Ministry of Defence's July exercise with an ACUA Pioneer drone boat and the U.S. Navy's first live-fire use of a 16-foot BlackSea Technologies Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC) in a sinking exercise this month show the same pattern: a cheap hull that can be retasked across roles without rebuilding the boat.
The UK exercise paired ACUA Ocean's Pioneer with a tethered unmanned aircraft from Teledyne FLIR, layering an aerial sensor over a surface hull. The U.S. Navy's GARC live-fire marked the first time the 16-foot autonomous craft, previously integrated into Baltic Sea drills in June 2025, was used to put a round on a target. Ukraine's Sea Baby USVs, the established baseline, have been adapted to carry first-person-view (FPV) drones and thermobaric rockets against Black Sea shipping. Each program uses a different vendor and a different payload. The hull is the common denominator.
MARTAC CTO Jim Harvey put the appeal in one line: "The value of a USV is you can iterate and scale at the tech pace." A destroyer takes a decade to spec, build, and commission. A modular drone boat can be re-tasked in a harbor. The result is a U.S., UK, Ukrainian, and NATO training calendar that now runs drone boats through rescue, scout, swarm, and strike scenarios in the same cycle.
Large surface combatants still carry command-and-control for a task group, magazine depth for sustained operations, and the ability to fight through contested airspace in ways no public USV program has yet demonstrated. None of the recent exercises tested those limits. Across the U.S., UK, Ukrainian, and NATO exercises, drone boats now absorb rescue, scout, swarm, and strike; big warships hold the missions only they can do.
The Oman rescue is the first public signal of where that layering lands. A drone boat has now done for the sailor in the water what a helicopter used to do, without putting a second crew at risk. Whether the next round of U.S., UK, and NATO exercises treats the mission as a one-off or a procurement signal is the decision to watch.
