The wire reads SpaceX's S-1 as a space race story. It is a siting story. Local opposition has become a hard wall, and that opposition appears to be a primary driver pushing companies toward orbital alternatives. The LA Business Journal's reporting cites 70% of Americans opposing data centers in their communities over power, bills, pollution, and climate, and names Monterey Park, El Segundo, and Alhambra as places that have actually blocked projects. That is the demand side: terrestrial siting is closing.
The LA Business Journal points to Sophia Space's Robert DeMillo arguing that low-Earth orbit access has opened beyond governments, making orbital computing newly thinkable. Reuters reported on April 21 2026 that SpaceX's S-1 then filed to host data centers on up to a million satellites, and the FCC's Space Bureau accepted the application as DA-26-113. Even SpaceX concedes, in its own filing, that the market may not work.
The apparent mechanism: when terrestrial capacity hits political resistance, capital may reroute to the next jurisdiction with room. In this cycle, that jurisdiction is orbit, and even the company best positioned to build it admits, in its own SEC paperwork, that the demand may be phantom. Trade press framing already calls this the Bridge to Nowhere.
