Climate intervention is being reclassified. What was framed as a blunt cooling lever now reads as a precision seasonal tool, and the Science Advances simulation by Fasullo and colleagues is the test case. The paper does not claim marine cloud brightening cools the planet. It claims that when you intervene, and for how long, decides the answer.
Fasullo's team tested the strategy against the two super El Niños on record: 1997-1998 and 2015-2016. The earliest and longest deployments restored neutral conditions. Late or short deployments barely registered. The same aerosol mass, different outcomes, because the ocean had already locked in.
The methodological move runs through the 2019-2020 Australian wildfire smoke plume. Real aerosols over the southeast Pacific nudged the climate toward La Niña. The simulation reads that accidental event as a calibration, then asks what a deliberate version would do. Marine cloud brightening stops being hypothetical when nature runs the test first.
The reframe carries a cost. Weakening one El Niño invites a stronger La Niña, which means drought in South America, fire risk in Indonesia, and a monsoon shift in Asia. The lever is precise. The second-order effects are not. Whoever holds it owns the world's weather on a six-month lag.
The question is no longer whether cloud brightening can work. It is who decides the schedule.
