The range figure in Business Insider's account makes the substitution legible. Fort Irwin's rocky ridges cut NOMAD's working radius from roughly 600 meters to about 200 meters. Inside that shrunken envelope the machine does the exposed work; outside it, soldiers still do, and the labor simply changes shape.
