180 US patents and 239 international filings covering sensors, optics, and tracking for virtual and augmented reality headsets moved from Sony to Meta. 43 transfers are done; the rest are still in motion.
Sony has begun transferring extended-reality patents to Meta. 43 of the moves are already recorded at the US Patent and Trademark Office, according to press reports citing a December 2025 assignment agreement and an October 5 USPTO disclosure. Digitimes' coverage puts the planned total at 418, while the Confirmation of Assignment Agreement Sony and Meta signed in December 2025 names 419. Extended reality, the category that covers VR headsets and AR glasses, is the hardware layer Meta has been pushing since the Quest line.
The package covers 180 US patents and 239 family filings in Japan, China, South Korea, and Europe. The filings describe the sensors, optics, and tracking systems that decide what a headset can see, where it can place a virtual object, and how it follows the wearer's eyes and hands.
Sony and Meta have not commented publicly on the move, and the licensing terms remain undisclosed. The 43-of-419 partial execution state is the live fact: more than 370 patents are still in transit. Watch the USPTO assignment records over the next quarter to see whether the rest land as assignments or licenses, and whether Sony holds any back.
