Nvidia's deal with the $32bn, no product lab gives Ilya Sutskever's team priority on Vera Rubin chips, the same generation now powering OpenAI.
Nvidia didn't just invest in Safe Superintelligence. The chipmaker placed the secretive Ilya Sutskever-founded lab in the same Vera Rubin queue as OpenAI, after getting a rare glimpse inside a research operation that has shipped nothing in two years and has said it has no near-term plan to sell anything.

The framing is unusual because SSI has nothing to scale to. The lab has no product, no revenue, and no plan to ship one. What it has is roughly $3bn raised from Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and DST Global at a reported $32bn valuation, plus a co-founder who disclosed a roughly $7bn OpenAI stake during testimony in Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI. What changed is who gets the chips. Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform reached full production in July 2026, and OpenAI is deploying it at scale this quarter, according to Nvidia's own announcement. The "worth scaling" line is SSI's own claim and is not independently verifiable. Read against a recent public framing, the deal also marks a posture change. In November the lab said scaling would keep producing improvements and would not stall, but that "something important will continue to be missing." Vera Rubin matters here because it is not a single chip. What to watch is the queue itself.
