Physical AI is the term of art for AI that runs inside machines that sense and act in the real world, from factory arms to humanoids, as distinct from chatbots or image generators. The hardware that makes it work is the perception layer: the cameras, microphones, motion chips, and tactile skins that let a robot know where it is, what it is touching, and what is moving around it. On July 28, 2026, two of Asia's largest sensor suppliers announced a partnership to assemble that layer jointly for the first time, with the first combined module targeted for 2027.
TDK Corporation (TSE: 6762) and LG Innotek said they would co-develop next-generation vision-sensing and tactile-sensing modules, with TDK contributing its InvenSense inertial and position sensors and microphones, and LG Innotek contributing optical and ultra-precision module design and vision sensing modules. TDK has framed the tie-up as building the "Body of AI," the sensing tier that sits beneath any physical-AI system.
The clearest way to read the deal is to map each company's contribution to a human sense. LG Innotek brings the eyes. Its robotics business already ships camera, LiDAR, and radar modules, and the company has a prior partnership with Boston Dynamics on perception hardware. TDK brings the inner ear and the skin. Its InvenSense motion chips track orientation and acceleration, and the new tactile module is designed to function like human skin on robot hands, arms, and bodies, detecting physical contact and pressure. Until now, a robot integrator had to buy the eyes from one supplier, the inertial sensors from another, and either build the skin in-house or skip it. The partnership puts all three on a single roadmap.
That roadmap starts with a single inertial-sensor module targeted for 2027 launch, with vision and tactile modules to follow. The clock matters because every humanoid and autonomous-mobile-robot program on the market is racing to qualify sensor stacks that can survive a real factory floor or a real home. A slipped 2027 deadline would push the partnership out of the design-in window for the next generation of platforms, and that design-in window is the only point at which a perception partnership becomes revenue rather than a press release.
The executives behind the announcement have reason to talk it up. TDK President and CEO Noboru Saito publicly called LG Innotek a "world-class leader in physical AI sensing," and LG Innotek CEO Moon Hyuksoo positioned the partnership as the next step in a long-running robotics push. None of that is independently verified. No design-ins, shipments, or customer wins have been disclosed, and the 2027 first module is a company target rather than a shipped product. Wire coverage will mark the deal by who signed. The test is whether a 2027 module ends up in a real humanoid's bill of materials, and whether the Boston Dynamics relationship turns the new skin from a press slide into a volume order.
