The Pentagon's GenAI.mil staff portal now offers OpenAI's ChatGPT alongside Google Gemini, scoped to controlled unclassified work for more than three million Defense Department personnel, per officials briefing reporters before Monday's press release.
ChatGPT ships as "ChatGPT Mil," OpenAI's Pentagon-packaged version, limited to controlled unclassified information (CUI), the sensitive-but-not-classified material that dominates DOD paperwork. The portal already ran Gemini; Defense Department officials said users should pick by task. One told Defense One: "Gemini, I like for search functionality or scraping certain sources. Chat for more, like, text-based work."
OpenAI and Pentagon officials both said the models are not for combat. An OpenAI official named unclassified use cases: NORTHCOM planning and disaster-response work with FEMA, Joint Staff logistics paperwork, and combatant-command logisticians reconciling supply and maintenance data. The portal is built to scale beyond three million DOD users.
Packaging work began February 2026; OpenAI said in June it expected "early July" deployment. The launch lands late August, first reported by Defense One.
What's not in the basis: independent confirmation of usage, procurement cost, or any mission outcome. So far this is a deployment announcement, not an adoption report.
