OpenAI Signals End to Unlimited ChatGPT Plans as AI Costs Surge
OpenAI may drop unlimited ChatGPT subscription plans as AI costs surge and usage explodes, according to Nick Turley, the company head of ChatGPT. Speaking on the Bg2 Pod podcast, Turley said: There is no world in which pricing does not significantly evolve when the technology is changing this quickly. The current subscription model was described by Turley as an accidental solution to capacity constraints - we stumbled into subscriptions. He said the large language model was initially launched as a temporary demo planned to be shut down after a month, but after it went viral, the company realized it had a real product. Turley compared unlimited AI plans to unlimited electricity plans - it just does not make sense. The shift echoes comments from Sam Altman last week that AI could be sold like electricity, metered by usage. OpenAI is exploring how to better align pricing with usage while still expanding access. The company is experimenting with advertising as one way to reach users who cannot afford subscriptions. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said the company is already talking about charging per agent rather than per user as AI becomes a coworker. Primary source: Business Insider
