Nvidia is in talks to backstop up to $250B of the Piketon complex. The arrangement tests whether the chip finance customer loop can hold at industrial scale.
OpenAI is nearing a deal to lease a roughly $500 billion data-center complex on a former uranium-enrichment site in southern Ohio, and Nvidia is in talks to backstop much of the financing, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times report. It is the largest single-vendor financing commitment in AI infrastructure to date and the first real stress test of the AI sector's circular financing model: the arrangement in which chipmakers and cloud providers fund the very startups that then spend heavily on the same companies' chips and services.
Nvidia sells the chips. OpenAI spends heavily on them. Now Nvidia is also in talks to guarantee the loans that let OpenAI build a campus big enough to buy more chips from Nvidia. Each leg makes the next one easier. The risk is that each leg also assumes the previous one holds.
Piketon, a town of about 2,000 in Pike County, sits on the former uranium-enrichment site in southern Ohio. The campus is sized for up to 10 gigawatts of power, roughly ten times the output of a large nuclear reactor and, per CNBC's translation, about the annual draw of 8 million U.S. households. The first phase is slated for 2028. Nvidia separately may finance around $350 billion in chip purchases for the facility on top of the backstop, per the WSJ and NYT pool.
That second number matters more than the first. The backstop covers construction and lease debt if OpenAI cannot service it. The chip-financing line extends Nvidia's exposure from infrastructure to inventory: the company is funding the customer and the customer's order book at the same time. Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google are also reportedly interested in leasing space at Piketon, but the most advanced bid is OpenAI's.
A Times-sourced analyst has warned that an OpenAI debt miss would not stay inside OpenAI. Nvidia's balance sheet, the broader AI capex cycle, and the credit lines behind other large training clusters sit in the same exposure chain. Nvidia's October 2025 strategic partnership with OpenAI, which set a 10-gigawatt deployment framework before this lease existed, gives the relationship an anchor but doesn't change the financing structure being tested here.
Two numbers will tell readers whether the loop is holding. The first is OpenAI's annualized revenue relative to the lease debt service on Piketon once the first phase comes online in 2028. The second is Nvidia's own free cash flow and balance-sheet headroom against the backstop, since a drawn guarantee hits the guarantor directly. If both lines stay ahead of their obligations, the model is audacious but sound. If either one cracks, the $500 billion headline becomes a stress event for the entire AI capex cycle, not just one campus in Ohio.
The financing structure is being negotiated now, in advance of the 2028 phase-one target. The terms that close will determine how durable the next two years of AI infrastructure spending actually are.
