OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Excel Beta, Powers It With GPT-5.4
OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT directly into spreadsheets. The company unveiled ChatGPT for Excel in beta—an add-in that embeds the AI assistant within workbooks to build models, run scenarios, and generate outputs based on cells and formulas.
Powered by GPT-5.4 (available as GPT-5.4 Thinking), the Excel integration lets users describe what they need in plain language, and ChatGPT creates or updates live Excel models while preserving formulas and assumptions. It can explain why outputs changed, trace and fix errors, and show how assumptions flow through a model.
The pitch: analysts, strategists, researchers, and accountants can move faster and focus on judgment rather than writing formulas.
"We're improving ChatGPT for Excel quickly based on user feedback," OpenAI noted, adding that complex formulas may still require manual refinement.
The timing: OpenAI claims its internal investment banking benchmark saw a jump from 43.7% with GPT-5 to 87.3% with GPT-5.4 Thinking—measuring tasks like building three-statement models with proper formatting and citations.
Also announced: new financial data integrations in ChatGPT for FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, Daloopa, S&P Global, Moody's, MSCI, Third Bridge, and MT Newswires (with FactSet coming soon). These bring market and company data into ChatGPT workflows for cited outputs like earnings summaries and valuation snapshots.
Availability: ChatGPT for Excel beta is rolling out for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. ChatGPT for Google Sheets is coming soon.
