OpenAI bought thousands of Mac minis to train AI agents. It's already reshaping Apple's roadmap

OpenAI has been buying tens of thousands of Apple's small desktops, the Mac mini and Mac Studio, to run reinforcement learning and computer-use-agent workloads, separate from the cloud GPU clusters it leases for large-scale model training. The Information first reported the bulk purchase; re-reports from Freepress Journal, Wccftech, and Crypto Briefing carry the same supply-chain signal.

The reason is Apple's unified memory architecture, which lets CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine share a single memory pool. That fits on-device agent work that doesn't map cleanly onto Nvidia GPUs. Anthropic is reportedly accessing the same class of hardware by renting Mac minis through AWS instead of buying.

The squeeze is already visible at checkout: higher-RAM Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations are showing delivery waits stretching from about two weeks to nearly two months, with Mac Studio worst hit. Apple has moved its next refresh forward, outside the window when it typically updates Macs alongside new iPhones. The reported lineup includes an M6-based Mac mini and a Mac Studio with an M5 Ultra option, plus support for linking multiple machines for larger workloads.
