Texas A&M researchers kept pig kidneys liquid below freezing in a pressure chamber for days, then transplanted them back. The catch: this is pig work, and human trials still need to happen.
About 17 Americans will die today waiting for a kidney (MIT Technology Review). The constraint is a 24-hour clock: standard ice storage buys a donated kidney about a day before it degrades.
In some years, about one in three donated kidneys is discarded before reaching a recipient. More than 104,000 people sit on the US waiting list.
A Texas A&M team, led by Matthew Powell Palm, has reported a different approach. Their device holds kidneys at -4°C inside a pressure-controlled chamber. Water stays liquid under pressure, so no ice crystals form to shred tissue. Pig kidneys stored for days this way were autotransplanted and, by the team's account, performed better than the ones kept on ice. The work was presented as a conference abstract at a transplant surgery meeting; peer-reviewed publication is still pending.
Kevin Myer, president and CEO of LifeGift, an organ-procurement organization serving parts of Texas, called the result "a landmark achievement." Myer was not involved in the study.
The method builds on a 2020 human-liver isochoric protocol and a 2025 Canadian pig-kidney study that kept supercooled kidneys alive for 48 hours. That gives the Palm team a direct bar to clear.
The honest limit: this is pig work, not a human trial. The 24-hour ice window is the bar to beat.
