Newcleo has filed a written roadmap with the NRC for a 200 MWe lead cooled fast reactor and a domestic MOX (mixed oxide) fuel plant, a procedural step, not an approval.
Newcleo has filed a Regulatory Engagement Plan with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a planned 200 MWe lead-cooled fast reactor and a domestic mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel plant, the company's first structured pre-application roadmap since sending a letter of intent on 23 February. The submission maps principal topics, expected technical submissions, and an indicative schedule for the LFR-AS-200 reactor and an associated MOX fabrication facility. It is a procedural step, not a license, approval, or construction authorization.
Lead-cooled fast reactors are cooled by molten lead rather than water and can run on recycled nuclear fuel. Newcleo pitches its design as a way to "close the nuclear fuel cycle," turning existing nuclear material into a domestic energy resource rather than a long-term waste liability. CEO Stefano Buono has cited that goal alongside reducing the spent-fuel burden and increasing energy independence.
Pre-application engagement with the NRC began in March. Newcleo says the plan draws on work by more than 100 engineers with decades of industrial experience, a company-asserted figure.
Separately, France's Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire et de Radioprotection (ASNR) issued a July opinion on safety options for Newcleo's parallel French MOX facility, judging them satisfactory at this stage. That supports the company's French construction-authorization application, which remains pending.
