The Aug. 11 rule replaces one at a time approvals for 3D printed metal parts with a class level qualification, but does not, on the Navy's own evidence, address whether suppliers can print safety critical parts at scale.
The U.S. Navy on Aug. 11 issued a new technical standard that swaps its one-at-a-time engineering sign-off for a class-level qualification when a cast or forged submarine part is replaced with a 3D-printed metal equivalent.
The rule is a Project Peculiar Document, the Navy's term for a standard tailored to a single program or part family. Numbered PPD 802-8436658, it lets program offices apply one qualification to whole categories of parts instead of running a new engineering review and first-article test for each swap. Seapower Magazine reports the release frames the change as removing bureaucratic barriers to "21st-century technology."
Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher, the Navy's director of submarine programs, endorsed the directive. The Navy's release also claims 3D-printed metal parts are already "performing flawlessly in deep-sea operations" aboard the Virginia-class attack submarines USS Washington (SSN-787) and USS Nevada (SSN-789).
The rule does not, on the Navy's own evidence, address the two real bottlenecks: whether suppliers and shipyards can print safety-critical parts, such as pressure-hull and reactor-adjacent components, at scale, and whether the "flawless" in-service claim holds up outside Navy public-affairs framing. Earlier commercial work, including an AML3D contract for obsolete submarine components, shows the industrial base is already leaning into AM substitution. The PPD lowers the paperwork tax on that shift, not the metallurgical one.
