Natura's 1 MWt molten salt research reactor is the first to clear the Nuclear Safety Design Agreement under the DOE's Reactor Pilot Program, an early step that does not yet authorize construction or operation.
Natura Resources' 1 MWt molten salt research reactor has signed a Nuclear Safety Design Agreement (NSDA) with the US Department of Energy, the first formal step under the DOE's Reactor Pilot Program authorization pathway and a milestone for one of 11 advanced-reactor projects selected under a framework created by executive orders signed in May 2025.
The NSDA covers design requirements, safety analysis approach, regulatory engagement, applicable requirements, and the key safety decisions for Natura's LF-MSR demonstration reactor. It is not a construction or operating license. Natura's commercial-scale units remain on a separate Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing track, with pre-application engagement running since January 2024.
Natura is running a DOE-authorized demonstration track and an NRC commercial track in parallel, keeping its research reactor and a future commercial fleet on different regulatory clocks. In April, the company announced 1,000 hours of operation of its Molten Salt Test System, a flowing-salt loop that validated continuous molten-salt-fuel-loop operation. In June, it signed a HALEU supply agreement with Quadrant Nuclear Industries, which is planning a facility at Idaho National Laboratory designed to produce up to 18 tonnes of HALEU per year.
What remains open: Natura still needs preliminary and final safety analyses for construction and operation under the DOE pathway, and the NRC pre-application work for the commercial units has not yet produced a construction permit application.
