The GPS constellation that guides cars and phones can also be picked up at lunar distance, and NASA has shipped a shoebox-sized receiver to prove it on the first commercial lunar relay satellite.
NASA's NavCube3-mini payload arrived at Intuitive Machines on July 13, the agency said in a release. It weighs 3.5 pounds, draws less than 20 watts, and is designed to track Earth-based GPS and Galileo signals from lunar distance, the same job a phone receiver does, but roughly ten times farther out.
The payload is the first piece of Intuitive Machines' planned lunar relay network, built under NASA's Near Space Network Services contract. The first node, Altus-1, will carry the receiver and provide communications and navigation for surface missions, including the Artemis South Pole landing NASA is targeting for 2028, where direct links to Earth are hard.
Before shipment, the receiver passed vibration, thermal vacuum, and electromagnetic compatibility testing at NASA Goddard, plus GPS and Galileo simulations before and after each environmental test, according to the Goddard capability page and NASA's technical report archive.
The catch: NavCube3-mini is still a tech demo, not yet flight-proven, and GPS at the Moon is not new. What changes is the bus: this is the first time the capability sits on a commercial relay intended to back Artemis.
