Musk's 'parents' line is doing the consent form's job

Family metaphors are the cheapest way to convert a workforce data extraction into a gift, and that is the only pattern that survives this week. The frame does the rhetorical work the consent form does not.

Musk told SpaceX workers they would "effectively be the parents" of Grok, the xAI assistant, because the model would inherit their "thoughts and ideas and beliefs." SpaceX has not publicly detailed which employee information is in scope, on what terms it is held, or whether there is an opt-out. The "parents" line answers a question that is not on the table. The real one is whose code, whose chat, and whose keystrokes train the model, and what the workers get back.

Meta rolled out a Model Capability Initiative that captured mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and screenshots. About 1,600 employees signed a petition opposing it. The shape was identical: dress a data extraction in a mission frame, then let the workforce absorb the friction. A SpaceX petition is the predicted arc.

The numbers are the tell. Musk projects ten gigawatts of AI compute could yield between three hundred billion and five hundred billion dollars in annual revenue, with AI revenue potentially surpassing the rest of SpaceX as soon as September. The labor decision and the revenue decision are the same decision. The metaphor is the only thing keeping the room from seeing it.

Workers gain nothing named. The employer gains a training corpus and a cover story.
