Moderna dosed the first humans with mRNA-1469, a Phase 1 candidate built against Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV), a species no licensed Ebola vaccine covers. The trial is running at three Canadian sites under Health Canada authorization, with CEPI backing the program as part of an expanded filovirus collaboration (BioSpace, Aug 4, 2026; CEPI release).
Merck's Ervebo and the Ad26.ZEBOV regimens target Zaire ebolavirus, the species behind the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic. BDBV is different, and the active outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which the WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17, is now the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record, with more than 3,800 cases and 1,700 deaths as of the CEPI release. Moderna's mRNA platform, scaled for COVID-19, iterates faster than older vaccine platforms. The trade-off is the cold-chain footprint: mRNA shots require subzero transport and storage that outbreak regions often lack.
The open question is whether mRNA-1469 elicits the immune response that would justify a field test in a setting licensed vaccines do not cover. Enrollment size and timeline to readout have not been disclosed (STAT+).
