Samsung Electronics leads a Series D that values the three year old Paris AI lab above $24 billion as Mistral pitches European buyers on a 'sovereign' AI stack.
Mistral raised €3 billion, roughly $3.5 billion, in a Series D at a post-money valuation above €21 billion (about $24 billion), the company said Tuesday — the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company.
Samsung Electronics led the round, with EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund and existing backer PSG Equity co-leading. The deal prices the three-year-old Paris lab at roughly an 80% step-up from its €11.7 billion mark one year ago, when ASML led a prior round.
CEO Arthur Mensch told CNBC the capital will fund Mistral's own data centers, with owned compute "growing around 100% in the next five years." The company now operates in 20 countries and lists more than 125 enterprise customers including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC.
Mistral is framing the raise as fuel for a "sovereign AI" stack — data, models, and compute kept under customer control — a pitch aimed at European buyers looking to step back from US cloud AI. Reception among US-focused watchers on Hacker News was skeptical, with commenters questioning whether Mistral is in the frontier-benchmark race at all or is deliberately ceding it.
The "largest European tech round" claim comes from Mistral's own release and has not been independently corroborated in the captured filings.
