Microplastics, and the smaller nanoplastics they fragment into, are now documented in children's urine, in placentas, and in human blood, breast milk, lungs, and brain tissue. The Commission's current term opened in 2024 and closes in 2029, when the European Parliament dissolves for the next election. A binding microplastics restriction cannot land outside that calendar without restarting. The Commission can carry a draft into a second term, but a binding text adopted in this Parliament is the form that holds.
A 2025 cohort study of roughly 1,000 children aged 6–9 found a significant association between urinary microplastics and behavioral problems. The polymers in those samples were polyamide (the synthetic behind stretch clothing), polypropylene (food packaging), and polyvinyl chloride (plumbing). Companion work in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety reached the same direction on cognitive function. A 2026 systematic review in Nanomaterials and a 2025 Frontiers in Neuroscience review describe animal and mechanistic work on neurobehavioral effects. Microplastic concentrations are higher in lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer tissue than in healthy tissue. The report flags that this may reflect bioaccumulation rather than cause. The clearest tissue-level example is a 2025 Nature Scientific Reports study on peritumoral and tumor tissue in colorectal cancer. A review in the NCBI archive walks through the carcinogenesis mechanisms, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and physical damage. Direct human causal evidence is still limited.
The relevant file is REACH, the EU's chemicals law, administered by the European Chemicals Agency. A separate microplastics restriction has been in pre-load since 2023; it covers both microplastics and the smaller nanoplastics they fragment into. Two Brussels addresses hold the file: ENVI, the European Parliament's environment committee, and DG ENV, the Commission's environment directorate-general. Outside the 2024–2029 term, the file resets and waits another five years.
The report's named voices are stakeholders, not independent experts. Gaia Angelini and Maria Westerbos are the report's authors. Their "public health emergency" framing is a stakeholder claim, not a verdict from an independent body. The companion peer-reviewed work on neurodevelopment and carcinogenesis carries more weight on the science; the policy ask is still the report's own.
