When the caller of an app stops being a person, the app stops needing a face. The next default surface for software is not a screen but a function call, and the firms that ship a callable layer alongside the human UI get to keep the seat. Everyone else becomes the form an agent routes around.
Lovable, the AI app builder whose users graduated from weekend prototypes to internal CRMs and admin panels, is testing that bet in public. CTO Fabian Hedin told Latent Space that customers moved from prototypes to minimum viable products to production apps serving real customers, then into the same operational software, support consoles, admin panels, internal dashboards, that an agent can now invoke directly through Lovable's hosted MCP server. The human UI and the function-calling layer are the same code, with two callers.
Hedin's quiet admission is the news: the pivot was forced by what users built, not by a roadmap. Lovable is not announcing a product line. It is hedging its own user interface in case the next caller of the software it sells is an agent rather than a person, and the hedge is the leading edge of a substrate shift every SaaS company now has to answer. The question is no longer whether to ship an agent-callable layer. It is how to do it before someone routes around you.
