The MORFIUS X Rotor is built to disable many drones per flight, an answer to the cost per engagement gap that has burned through U.S. interceptor stockpiles.
Commercial Shahed-type drones can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The missiles designed to shoot them down often cost more per round than the targets they destroy. Lockheed Martin says its new MORFIUS X-Rotor is built to flip that ratio, and the company unveiled the system at the Farnborough Airshow on July 20, 2026.
MORFIUS is not a missile. It is an airborne, high-power microwave (HPM) beam designed to disable the electronics inside many drones in a single sortie, then return to base and fly again. A traditional surface-to-air missile engages one target at a time and is consumed by the engagement; a microwave beam radiates outward and can disrupt a volume of airspace. The angle Lockheed is selling is per-engagement cost, and it is the calculation the U.S. military is increasingly forced to make.
Lockheed says MORFIUS X-Rotor can neutralize more than 50 enemy drones in a single flight, and that the system is ground-launched, field-recoverable, and field-reusable. The payload is sensor-agnostic and command-and-control-agnostic, meaning it does not require a dedicated fire-control radar or a unique sensor to direct it. In practice, that lets MORFIUS plug into existing air-defense feeds rather than forcing operators to build a new radar network around the system. Randy Crites, who leads Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control's Advanced Programs group, called MORFIUS "a new benchmark for counter-drone capability."
The X-Rotor is the latest configuration in a lineage that has been in flight testing since 2017. The company says recent flight, intercept, and lethality demonstrations have taken place in Arizona, California, and Oklahoma, and that additional flight tests are planned. Prototype production of both the airframe and the HPM payload is being accelerated. Lockheed describes MORFIUS as the only ground-launched, field-reusable airborne HPM system that can deliver 50-plus kills per flight without depending on a fire-control radar; Defense News and Aviation Week have both written up the unveiling, though the 50-drones-per-flight figure remains a Lockheed assertion.
The MORFIUS unveiling landed the same day Lockheed announced a cheaper Patriot interceptor at Farnborough. The two announcements point in the same direction: cost-per-kill is now an explicit procurement target. Defense News points to U.S. interceptor stockpiles, which have been rapidly expended against Iranian missile and Shahed-type drone strikes. Lockheed says the program aligns with the U.S. Department of Defense's 2025-2028 Rapid Response Counter-UAS Roadmap. The company uses "Department of Defense" as the U.S. government's defense department.
Lockheed is not the only company repositioning for this market. Aviation Week reports a parallel five-country European effort, LEAP, that began funding low-cost interceptors on July 14, 2026, the week before Farnborough. The European bet is on cheap kinetic rounds. Lockheed's is on a reusable beam.
The open question is the one Lockheed declines to put a number on. The company describes the per-engagement cost as "significantly lower" than a missile intercept but has not published a dollar figure. The airframe production ramp, the next round of Arizona and Oklahoma flight tests, and a Department of Defense procurement decision will test that claim through the rest of 2026.
