A recruiter who has spent years building relationships, learning which hiring managers approve fast and which candidates actually thrive under pressure, carries something no AI system has had: a memory that does not reset between conversations. LinkedIn published a detailed architecture for building exactly that kind of persistent memory into AI agents this week. What the company did not do is release any code.
The LinkedIn engineering blog described the Cognitive Memory Agent, its internal system for giving agents persistent memory across sessions. Rather than starting each conversation from scratch, the system stores three categories of information: what happened in past interactions (episodic memory), what the agent has learned about the user over time (semantic memory), and the workflows and habits it has observed (procedural memory). The result, in LinkedIn's framing, is something closer to accumulated professional judgment than a chatbot that forgets you the moment you close the tab.
The wire signal on this story called it a blueprint for production agent builders. Searching the official LinkedIn GitHub organization found no repository for the Cognitive Memory Agent. The blog post describes internal infrastructure for LinkedIn's Hiring Assistant in detail. There is no code repository, no open-source license, no downloadable framework.
Karthik Ramgopal, a distinguished engineer at LinkedIn, put the design goal plainly: "Good agentic AI is not stateless. It remembers, adapts, and compounds." That framing reflects a genuine shift in how enterprise teams think about AI, moving from single-turn question-answering toward systems that accumulate context the way a human advisor does. The question is what teams are actually supposed to build with it.
The gap between architecture announcements and actual code releases is a recurring pattern in enterprise AI. Mem0, one of the better-documented open-source memory projects, measured the tradeoffs directly: a system that stores everything achieves 72.9% recall accuracy but takes nearly ten seconds per query — about fourteen times more expensive than selective retrieval. A leaner approach hits 68.4% accuracy in just over a second. Every production memory system navigates some version of this: more memory means more accuracy but higher cost and latency. LinkedIn does not say where it lands, because LinkedIn is not sharing its system.
ByMAR's taxonomy identifies several approaches to agent memory: raw conversational recall, user profile memory, reflective memory, and enterprise context APIs. LinkedIn's CMA fits the user profile and multi-agent coordination category. Whether it represents a generically useful blueprint or a system tightly coupled to LinkedIn's specific hiring data is not clear from the public documentation.
The practical limitation for teams evaluating CMA is straightforward: there is no code to run, no configuration to inspect, no benchmark data comparing it against alternatives. The architecture description is useful for understanding how LinkedIn solved the memory problem for their recruiter workflow. It is not an open-source release.
Enterprise AI vendors have strong incentives to publish architecture details that signal technical leadership, with less urgency to release the underlying code. The announcement value comes from demonstrating sophisticated infrastructure thinking. The actual engineering stays proprietary. For teams building production agents, the distinction between "we described how we built it" and "here is the code" is the entire question.
What LinkedIn published is a detailed blog post about infrastructure it built for itself. The three-layer memory model, the multi-agent coordination design, the challenge of keeping stored knowledge current — all of this is worth understanding as the enterprise agent infrastructure category develops. But "LinkedIn open-sourced its agent memory architecture" is not what happened. Teams looking for open-source components to build on will need to look elsewhere.
