Kalavinka says its Nyx MK I is built to skip satellite navigation and use onboard sensors and AI to find unarmored or lightly defended targets in jammed airspace. No independent test has been reported.
A loitering munition is a small drone that circles over an area searching for a target, then dives on it like a precision-guided missile. Most of them still rely on GPS to navigate, a single point of failure that recent peer and near-peer conflicts have exploited as a matter of routine. India's Nyx MK-I, unveiled this week by Kalavinka Technologies, is built to keep working after that signal disappears.
The Kalavinka announcement frames the drone as fire-and-forget: it does not need a continuous communications link, and it does not need GNSS. Navigation and target identification are handled onboard, using sensors and embedded AI, so the system can operate in what the company describes as a highly contested, GPS-denied environment.
The driving problem is not theoretical. Jamming and spoofing of satellite navigation have become standard practice in current conflicts, and weapons that depend on GPS to reach a target can be neutralized before they get there. Vendors are now marketing systems that fuse inertial measurement, computer vision, and onboard computing into a single package, replacing satellite fixes with locally derived ones.
Kalavinka, founded by engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, says the platform is fully indigenous, spanning CAD, aerodynamic simulation, embedded computing, and software integration. The system is positioned inside the Aatmanirbhar Bharat push for domestic defence production and inside the armed forces' network-centric warfare doctrine. The company describes it as designed for precision strikes against soft targets, forward enemy positions, and tactical assets the enemy would rather not advertise.
The drone sits inside a category that is no longer experimental. Switchblade, made by AeroVironment, and IAI's Harop have been exported and combat-used for years, and several Indian startups are now producing loitering munitions of their own. Nyx MK-I joins that group with a sharper claim: autonomous navigation and target identification without external aids. That claim is what the company is selling, and it is also the part most likely to be tested first by critics and procurement officers.
Target-selection logic is the first gap the press release leaves open. A system that finds its own targets has to define what counts as one, and the announcement does not describe how that decision is made, who reviews it, or what failsafe exists if the sensor stack misidentifies a non-combatant. The second gap is independent verification. Capabilities for the Nyx MK-I are vendor-stated; no Indian Army test range result, third-party evaluation, or combat deployment has been reported. The press excerpt circulated so far cuts off mid-sentence, so the specifications the system will be judged on (range, warhead, endurance, sensor stack, unit cost, technical readiness level) are not yet on the public record.
A loitering munition that operates without GPS is a credible response to a real and growing problem on the modern battlefield. Whether Nyx MK-I in particular delivers on that promise is a separate question, and one the company has so far answered with a press release rather than a test report.
