The electric air taxi maker retrofitted a single engine Cessna cargo plane with self flying software and crossed the US remotely. A $17M Air Force contract and a $500M sensor acquisition point to where the company is actually going.
Joby Aviation, the company best known for electric air taxis, said Friday that an aircraft carrying its autonomy stack flew more than 3,100 miles across the United States with no human pilot in control at any point. The company called it the "first-ever autonomous flight across the United States." That claim belongs to Joby, not to any independent flight-tracking body (TechCrunch).
The test airframe was a converted Cessna Caravan, a single-engine turboprop that has ferried cargo, skydivers, and short-haul commuters for decades. It was not the electric air taxi Joby is best known for. A pilot sat in the cockpit only to satisfy regulators. The aircraft taxied, took off, navigated, and landed on its own, with remote supervisors watching from Joby's Marina, California headquarters and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina. It is continuing westbound, with planned stops in Louisville, Kentucky and Salt Lake City over the next two weeks.
Joby is positioning the autonomy stack as a product that can be retrofitted onto a wide range of conventional aircraft. The stack itself, the sensor fusion, planning software, and remote-supervision layer, is what flew the Caravan across the country. The first product the company has named is a regional airframe carrying that stack, aimed at defense missions and commercial freight. Urban air taxis become one line of business among several, not the only one.
The defense wiring is already in place. Joby holds a $17 million Air Force contract through AFWERX, the service's experimental procurement arm. Shaw Air Force Base, home of the 20th Fighter Wing, is one of the two ground stations that watched the Caravan cross the country. In August 2026, Joby closed a $500 million acquisition of Resonant Sciences, an Ohio-based maker of RF and sensor systems, and folded the company into a dedicated defense business unit. Resonant brings the radio-frequency and sensor capability an autonomy stack needs to see, identify, and avoid, capability Joby previously had to buy or partner for.
Joby closed the Resonant acquisition in August, started the cross-country flight on Friday, and now calls the autonomy stack a "second business" alongside the air taxi. The flight is the public proof point, but the customer list the announcement implies is the more durable shift. The Department of Defense, the Air Force's emerging autonomous cargo programs, and eventually commercial freight do not need a five-seat eVTOL. They need a sensor suite, a planning system, and a remote supervisor they can put on a Caravan, a King Air, a C-147, or whatever else is already in the fleet.
The "first-ever" framing is a marketing claim. Smaller autonomous cross-country flights have been logged for years by military test programs, academic teams, and modified general-aviation aircraft, even if none have been branded as a commercial product. Joby has not disclosed whether the 3,100-mile trip used public airspace under instrument flight rules the whole way, or whether portions were flown under restricted or test conditions. The $500 million Resonant deal was reported as cash and stock with no mix-of-consideration breakdown. The $17 million AFWERX figure has not been clarified as a single task order or a cumulative portfolio total.
What is supportable is the pivot. The company that filed for an air-taxi IPO and spent a decade building a tilt-rotor eVTOL now describes autonomy as a "second business" alongside the air taxi. The Caravan is the first public evidence that the pivot is operational, not just a slide deck. Whether autonomous cargo and defense aviation become a real market, and on what timeline, is a question the next two years of Air Force and commercial-freight contracts will answer, not one cross-country flight.
