European IQM will deliver a 5 qubit Spark training system to Brazil's Eldorado; heavier work will run on a 54 qubit IQM system in Europe, leaving Brazilian research dependent on remote access.
Brazil's Eldorado Research Institute has agreed to buy a 5-qubit superconducting machine from European hardware vendor IQM, a deal the company frames as the first quantum computer in South America owned by a private research institute. The system is due at Eldorado's Campinas campus in the first quarter of 2027, and the agreement is also IQM's first sale on the continent.
The on-premises hardware is the IQM Spark, a 5-qubit machine and the smallest tier in IQM's lineup, positioned by the company's own product page as a tool for writing and debugging quantum algorithms locally rather than for production-scale workloads. Heavier research will not run in Campinas at all. The agreement pairs the local hardware with remote access to a 54-qubit IQM system hosted in Europe, reached over the cloud.
The "first" claim refers to ownership of a small training node, not to domestic access to a competitive quantum machine. Meaningful compute stays in Europe, and Brazilian research will, for now, depend on the vendor's continued willingness to expose that capacity remotely.
Eldorado sits next to the University of Campinas, known locally as Unicamp, in Brazil's largest technology cluster, a stretch of Campinas research parks that already hosts semiconductor and software engineering groups. The institute is a nonprofit research body that has operated for more than 27 years, according to the release. Its stated goals for the hardware are to build expertise in quantum algorithms, grow a local pool of quantum hardware and software talent, and develop hybrid designs that combine high-performance computing (HPC), quantum processors, and AI.
Quantum-HPC-AI integration is one of the louder themes in current quantum marketing, and the release leans on it. The physical install in Campinas does not, by itself, deliver that integration. A 5-qubit machine cannot meaningfully accelerate an HPC workload, and the AI angle in the announcement is not pinned to any specific application. The hardware does deliver a place for Eldorado researchers to learn the basics of running real quantum code.
Eldorado superintendent José Bertuzzo, quoted in The Qubit Report's coverage of the release, framed the deal in workforce and access terms rather than as a capability breakthrough. The release does not disclose the purchase price, and the Yahoo Finance syndication carries the same wire copy. The first hardware is due on the ground in Campinas in roughly six months. What follows depends on whether the cloud link to Europe becomes a permanent dependency or a bridge to a larger on-prem system; IQM's product line already includes a 20-qubit machine upgradable to 54.
