IonQ reported two U.S. defense awards on Aug. 6, 2026, and the structural details matter more than the dollar figure attached to only one of them. The $28 million is the DARPA It's About Time extension; the NRO contract for the company's Capella subsidiary carries no disclosed value, and independent reporting confirms it was handed to IonQ sole source, not awarded through an open competition (Quantum Computing Report; Via Satellite / Defense Daily).
The DARPA contract extends work that began under the agency's Robust Optical Clock Network (ROCN) program with Vector Atomic, which IonQ acquired in October 2025. Under the new extension, IonQ will scale up and deliver 125 Evergreen-05 clocks to U.S. government customers, and put $15 million into a dedicated manufacturing facility, testing equipment, and technical staff (IonQ press release). The Evergreen-05 is a 5-liter, shoebox-sized optical atomic clock designed for tactical land, maritime, and airborne timing, what the military calls PNT, for position, navigation, and time.
Portable atomic clocks are worth Pentagon money because GPS, the standard way to deliver precise time to warfighters, is also the standard target for jamming and spoofing. Optical atomic clocks are small enough to deploy in the field and stable enough to keep sub-nanosecond accuracy for days without a GPS signal. IonQ says the Evergreen-05 holds under one nanosecond of timing error over 10 days, that its long-term drift matches active hydrogen masers, the lab-grade timing workhorse, in 1/75th of the volume, and that it projects less than one second of error over 30 million years (Quantum Computing Report). Those figures are vendor-stated through IonQ's release pipeline and have not been independently confirmed outside it.
The NRO contract is the second leg. Capella Space, also picked up by IonQ in 2025, sells commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery: radar pictures taken from satellites that see through clouds and at night, which electro-optical reconnaissance cameras cannot. Under the agency's Radar Commercial Augmentation (RCA) program, the NRO is buying that imagery for national security missions and tactical operational awareness (IonQ press release).
The NRO did not run a competitive procurement. The RCA awards were issued sole source to three vendors, Capella, Iceye US, and Umbra, down from an original five that participated in the NRO's phased Commercial Radar Capabilities study effort that began in January 2022 (Via Satellite / Defense Daily). The agency framed RCA as "a significant step in the NRO's strategy to build a more resilient and responsive overhead architecture" and signaled continued openness to onboarding new providers via its Commercial Solutions Openings.
Twelve months ago IonQ was a publicly traded quantum-computing name with no defense unit. In the year since, it has folded Vector Atomic into a quantum sensing and PNT division, brought Capella into a space division, and is now collecting defense work in both. The DARPA extension pays for timing hardware; the NRO award pays for imagery services. The market is the same: government customers building redundancy against GPS denial and weather-bound reconnaissance.
The next concrete milestone to track is the $15 million PNT manufacturing facility, since the 125-clock delivery commitment is the most dated public obligation IonQ has tied to the new DARPA extension.
