Meta says accounts that look like real people but are AI generated will lose recommendation reach unless they adopt a new "AI generated profile" tag.
Instagram is tying a new “AI-generated profile” label to its recommendation engine: accounts that look like real people but are AI-generated will lose reach unless they adopt the tag, and Meta says it will proactively flag the ones that don’t, per Business Insider.
The relabel swaps Instagram’s older opt-in “AI Creator” tag for an enforced “AI-generated profile” marker. Non-compliant accounts get demoted rather than deleted; their posts are withheld from algorithmic recommendations until the label is added. Meta frames the rule as a response to user complaints, quoted in the report: “people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated.”
The targeting is narrow. The policy singles out accounts that visually resemble real people, often styled as attractive women, and post lifestyle-style photos and videos. Lil Miquela, the CGI persona cited as the pre-generative-AI-boom precedent, gets name-checked. The new rule does not address other flavors of AI-made content already in feeds, from the “sexy fruit melodramas” to AI-generated deli menus.
Meta says it will use its own detection to flag suspected AI personas masquerading as humans, a step beyond the self-attestation model. What remains unspecified: how Meta will reliably detect AI-generated likeness at scale, and whether the new label will actually surface to ordinary users browsing the feed.
