The deal brings silicon spin qubits — a semiconductor based alternative to IBM's superconducting circuits — into IBM's quantum portfolio alongside its superconducting program, linking both modalities to IBM's Anderon quantum wafer foundry, opened
IBM has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a Malibu-based R&D institution jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors, the companies announced Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close by the end of Q3 2026, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
The acquisition adds HRL's expertise in silicon-spin qubits to IBM's quantum hardware program, which has been anchored on superconducting circuits. Silicon-spin qubits use electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots as the basic computational unit, a different physical approach from IBM's existing superconducting qubit architecture. Because both modalities rely on advanced semiconductor fabrication, IBM is positioning the combination as a way to share manufacturing learning curves across control electronics, cryogenics, and wafer processing.
The deal also creates a direct connection to Anderon, IBM's pure-play quantum wafer foundry established in May 2026 with U.S. Department of Commerce support. IBM says the foundry is designed to host silicon-spin qubit production alongside its superconducting line. HRL's semiconductor quantum dot engineering, including digitally controlled silicon processing units built on CMOS-compatible processes, is the technical asset IBM is acquiring.
"Silicon-spin offers a parallel path to fault tolerance," IBM said in its announcement. That framing — a parallel path, not a shortcut — is the careful one. IBM's published fault-tolerant quantum computing targets remain unchanged: Starling targeted for 2029 (capable of 100 million quantum operations) and Blue Jay for the mid-2030s (projected for 1 billion operations). Those dates did not move with this announcement.
HRL's portfolio also includes quantum sensing technology for defense, navigation, and life sciences, alongside research into novel quantum materials for high-efficiency detectors and chips. After close, Boeing and GM will continue partnering with IBM on quantum applications and advanced industrial workloads — the companies are exiting as owners, not as customers.
The deal is best read as a hedge rather than a leap. HRL's silicon-spin team is small, the modality remains early-stage, and IBM's roadmap milestones did not accelerate. What IBM acquired is a second hardware modality and a fab-native link to the Anderon line it opened in May — the one thing its quantum roadmap was missing.
