Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest U.S. military shipbuilder, signed performance-based production agreements with Path Robotics and GrayMatter Robotics worth up to $900 million over seven years, the company said Thursday. The money is not an award. It is a ceiling, and it converts to actual work only if two outside physical-AI vendors clear Navy-grade development and delivery milestones.
The agreements are the first production-scale awards under HII's High-Yield Production Robotics (HYPR) program, which the company launched in April to bring third-party robotics into fabrication work for aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, amphibious ships, future frigates, and unmanned surface vessels. HII is the prime contractor for the Navy's two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and a major submarine and surface-ship builder; its production schedule has been a recurring target in congressional and Navy commentary on fleet readiness.
Under the structure, each company will move through a Navy-grade development stage and a separate delivery stage, with funding tied to technology, manufacturing-readiness, and performance gates. Path Robotics, which builds self-programming welding robots, is set to receive up to $600 million of the envelope, according to local Ohio Tech News reporting. GrayMatter Robotics, which makes robotic sanding and surface-finishing systems, takes the remainder. Process coverage extends to grinding, blasting, painting, assembly, and inspection.
Eric Chewning, HII's executive vice president for maritime systems and corporate strategy, called the move a "generational investment" and "a new approach to robotics in shipbuilding" in HII's announcement of the agreements. Andy Lonsberry of Path Robotics called HYPR "a powerful validation" of physical AI scaling into shipbuilding, per the HII release and The Robot Report. The language points to a probe, not a transformation thesis.
Physical AI here means AI-driven robots designed to handle varied, complex physical tasks such as welding a curved hull plate or sanding a nonstandard surface, work that older automation couldn't perform without heavy programming. Both companies pitch their systems as adaptive rather than fixed-sequence. The bet is that a robot which can learn a new weld path on the fly can shorten the labor-intensive steps that dominate carrier and submarine build cycles, where unique geometry and thick plates defeat traditional fixed automation.
"Up to $900 million" is contingent money, and the milestones are the only thing that turns the ceiling into delivered hulls. HII has not disclosed the gate schedule, which gate failures would trigger renegotiation rather than termination, or how much of the $900 million is committed versus optional. The agreement is also silent on where the work will run, whether at HII's Newport News shipyard, its Ingalls Shipbuilding division in Mississippi, or at vendor facilities, a detail that matters for whether the throughput gains land inside HII's constrained production lines or further out in the supply chain.
Prior shipyard automation bets have a mixed record on throughput. The Navy and its primes have tried robotic welding, paint-stripping, and large-panel fabrication before, with documented gains in some shops and persistent integration problems in others. The HYPR test is structurally different in that it pays vendors on milestones rather than buying equipment outright, which shifts the scaling risk onto Path Robotics and GrayMatter. If the gates don't clear, HII can walk away with its program frame intact.
HII has not said when the first Navy-grade gate is scheduled to be hit, when delivery-stage work would begin, or which ship class will get the first physical-AI-built component.
