A Carnegie Mellon lab's tethered snake robot was sent into a collapsed La Guaira building where Jordanian dog teams and Colombian infrared cameras had disagreed on a survivor.
In a collapsed apartment building in La Guaira, days after the June 24 earthquakes, a four-foot modular snake robot slipped 15 to 20 feet down a hole where a Venezuelan father waited for word of his missing son. The dog teams from Jordan and the infrared teams from Colombia had disagreed about whether a survivor was inside. The snakebot, controlled by a gamepad and tethered to a laptop, was the third opinion, and the only thing that fit.
The machine came from the Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, led by Howie Choset. From roughly June 30 to July 3, 2026, the CMU team used the modular snake-shaped robot to search collapsed buildings in the Venezuelan coastal state that took the brunt of the shaking. The design has been in continuous development for about 20 years; its prior humanitarian deployment was after the September 19, 2017 Mexico City earthquake, when the same family of robots searched a collapsed apartment building there (CMU 2017 Mexico City deployment).
The binding constraint in week-two rubble is geometry, not intelligence. The robot is 4 feet long, built from a chain of linked modular segments, and designed to thread through gaps a camera on a stick cannot reach and a search dog cannot fit into. The operator steers the head with a gamepad; the body coordinates the rest of its shape autonomously, climbing over pipes and rebar inside the debris (Ars Technica). "In a sense, you're doing minimally invasive surgery on a structure with a snake robot," Choset told the magazine.
The human backdrop is large. The World Bank has estimated $19.6 billion in damage from the June 24 quakes. The United Nations has requested nearly $300 million to help more than 1.3 million people affected. International search-and-rescue teams, in aggregate, have reported roughly 6,500 survivors pulled from the wreckage, a figure circulated by Ars Technica as a round number rather than independently tallied.
The CMU deployment reached the field through an unusual chain. Beatriz Gonzalez, a native Venezuelan living in Atlanta, asked the AI chatbot Grok for ways to help after the quakes, and was pointed to a 2017 CMU article about the Mexico City snakebot deployment. Gonzalez reached out, the lab confirmed the trip on stage at a Point State Park concert in Pittsburgh between sets by Third Eye Blind and Nelly on June 27, and the team flew south (Tribune-Review). The team's own accounting is honest. They returned without finding a survivor, and identified a short to-do list: add 3D point cloud and lidar mapping so the head of the robot can produce a denser model of what it sees, and refine the packing and field protocol so the kit deploys faster next time. Choset's team is now preparing for the next deployment.
A separate, larger story runs in the background. The Financial Times has reported that the United States has collected more than $13 billion in Venezuelan oil revenues since capturing President Nicolás Maduro in a January military raid and securing cooperation from Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, with the allocation of those funds for Venezuelan rebuilding still ambiguous. The CMU deployment is not part of that financial arrangement, and the lab's work is the more legible end of the response: a tethered, joystick-driven machine, packed into luggage, sent where a father waited for an answer.
