The non binding MoU joins Honeywell's certified Anthem avionics with Shield AI's Hivemind autonomy software. Both companies say the harder problem is regulator sign off.
Honeywell Aerospace and Shield AI signed a Memorandum of Understanding on July 22, 2026, announced from the Farnborough air show. The agreement is not a partnership launch, a product, or a deployment. It is a shared bet that the next hard step for AI-piloted flight is the audit: pairing flight-certified hardware with autonomy software so a single review can cover both.
The two companies plan to pair Honeywell's Anthem avionics suite with Shield AI's Hivemind software development kit into a single stack they say can be audited end to end. Anthem is Honeywell's certified flight electronics — the navigation, sensing, and cockpit systems that already carry regulator sign-off on crewed aircraft. Hivemind is the autonomy software Shield AI has used in defense uncrewed systems. Combining them under one stack is the move that, on paper, lets a single review cover both the certified hardware and the AI that flies it.
A parallel workstream will explore what an AI-piloted autonomy stack would need to look like for commercial aviation and other transportation. That track is explicitly architectural and exploratory; the MoU names no aircraft program, no dollar terms, and no certification milestone for the civil side.
In the other direction, Shield AI said it will evaluate Honeywell's high-integrity safety-critical products for its own uncrewed platforms. The reciprocal lane suggests Honeywell is also a future supplier, not only an integrator of Shield's software.
Both companies describe the harder problem as certification and trust rather than capability. Honeywell Aerospace president Matt Milas, who runs the Defense & Space unit, said in the release that customers want to move from demonstration to deployment. Shield AI CEO Gary Steele, in the same release, called the agreement an attempt to "solve the trust gap" between working demos and an autonomy stack a customer can put in writing.
That characterization comes from the announcing party's own release, and it deserves a clear hedge. The agreement is a memorandum of understanding, not a contract: it is a non-binding statement of intent with no programs, budgets, or schedules attached. The only public basis for it is the press release from one of the two signatories; Honeywell has not published a parallel release in this packet, and there is no independent regulator, analyst, or customer voice on the record.
The bet is that the first AI-piloted autonomy program to clear an audit will be one whose software and certified hardware were reviewed together from the start. The two conditions that would mark the bet working: a regulator pathway that treats the combined stack as a single reviewable artifact, or a named defense or commercial customer that funds an integration. The release names no such audit, no program of record, and no customer to test it against.
