Meteobase, an automated ground station that launches and recharges a small fixed wing drone, is taking on the twice daily weather balloon routine as the helium those balloons burn is finite.
A weather-hardened box on the ground opens its lid, and a small fixed-wing drone lifts out on a pre-programmed climb. It flies a profile through the lowest few thousand meters of the atmosphere, gathers data at set altitudes, and returns to the same box to recharge and upload. The system, called Meteobase, is built by the Swiss company Meteomatics, and within a single week of late July 2026 it edged closer to the center of US weather forecasting.
For ninety years, the workhorse has been the instrumented weather balloon. Thousands are released every day worldwide. They drift on the wind, consume irreplaceable helium, and need a human crew to launch and recover them. Helium is finite; the twice-daily launch ritual is the cost.
The drone changes three things: it climbs a programmed profile rather than drifting, it returns to the same box, and it can fly multiple missions a day to chase fog, icing, or an advancing front rather than one balloon and one snapshot. In January, Meteodrone feeds reached the US National Weather Service for the first time. On July 30, a DroneLife report framed Meteomatics as being added to NOAA's forecasting toolbox, and the Journal Record reported Oklahoma standing up a 3D Mesonet drone weather-data system.
The balloon has been part of the popular sky since the 1930s. The drone will look very different in the night sky.
