The tech industry is finally admitting what many suspected: somebody has to be responsible for what AI agents do on the internet.
According to reporting by Gizmodo, the open-source agent framework OpenClaw isn't going anywhere — Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently called it "a new computer" at the company's 2026 GTC conference, praising the project for introducing the concept of a personal agent that works while you do other things. But that popularity has a cost: as more companies build on OpenClaw's patterns, the question of who's actually in control when autonomous bots hit the web has moved from theoretical to urgent.
The most concrete example comes from Meta. After acquiring Moltbook — a social platform where AI agents could theoretically communicate with each other — the company almost immediately imposed terms of service holding users personally responsible for their agents' actions. The language is explicit: "AI agents are not granted any legal eligibility with use of our services... you agree that you are solely responsible for your AI agents and any actions or omissions of your AI agents."
World, Sam Altman's eyeball-scanning verification company, took a different approach with AgentKit, a tool designed to confirm a real human is behind purchases made by AI agents. The use case is obvious — nobody wants a rogue agent maxing out a credit card — but it's not yet clear how prevalent agent-initiated transactions actually are. Human Security reported last year that while a significant chunk of AI agent traffic involved shopping tasks, only about 3% reached checkout. Most agents are designed not to pull the trigger without human approval.
China is taking a harder line. Per the New York Times, regulators there are concerned about security risks from OpenClaw and exploring ways to impose protections — a notable shift given how widely the framework was adopted.
The numbers underscore why this matters. SecurityScorecard tracked OpenClaw instances exposed through misconfiguration and found at least 220,000 agents with access to sensitive data including text messages, emails, and financial credentials. The Wild West era may be ending — but the cleanup is just beginning.
