Frontier labs ship the science and disperse the scientists

When a consumer product cycle dominates a frontier lab, the science gets shipped into the open record while the team that built it gets scattered. Google just made that trade with the 2024 Chemistry laureates.

The 200-million-structure database that AlphaFold produced is still live, per Engadget's report. Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug-discovery arm, still employs researchers from the program. The 2021 Nature methodology paper is still the canonical reference. The science is settled. What ended in June 2026 was the named team, reassigned to Gemini or walked out the door. Wire framing presents this as Google abandoning protein-structure prediction. The more accurate frame is narrower: in a frontier lab, the Nobel recognizes a capability that the lab treats as productized, while the human capital that produced it is treated as fungible. The protein-folding problem is still solved. The people who solved it are no longer in the same room, and the lab that produced them is now pitching a chatbot.
