Five of twelve approved semiconductor plants are now producing chips, the first production milestone in India's multi-year bid to become a reliable second source in the global chip supply chain.
Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said roughly 200 chip design companies have emerged under India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, and that the country has trained about 70,000 chip design engineers in four years, working toward an 85,000 target. More than 105 semiconductor startups have access to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, the software used to lay out and verify chip designs before fabrication; 20 of those startups have raised venture capital.
India hosted industry roundtables at SEMICON India 2026 with Singapore (142 participants), Europe (139) and South Korea (115). Singapore, which already runs mature chip packaging and manufacturing, brought the largest delegation, making it the partnership most likely to translate into short-term capacity.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told the roundtables that resilient supply chains rest on four pillars: reliability, credibility, incentives, and value creation.
The next test is whether a sixth approved plant ramps to production, and whether the Singapore partnership produces a concrete deal rather than a joint statement.
